A boom barrier, also known as a boom gate, is a bar or pole that pivots to allow the boom to block vehicular or pedestrian access through a controlled point. Typically, the boom is raised to allow access and lowered to block it. These barriers are commonly used at level crossings, drawbridges, parking facilities, checkpoints, and entrance gates to restricted areas. They often work in conjunction with other security measures like ticketing systems, card readers, or intercoms.
Boom barriers can be manually operated or automated. Automated boom barriers are usually controlled by an electronic system and may include safety features like sensors to prevent the barrier from lowering onto a vehicle or person.
